Description

Savannah Air National Guard Base is located at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, eight miles northwest of the Savannah Historic District in Georgia. The site was established as Chatham Field in 1942 when the U.S. Army Air Corps assumed control of an airfield project originally initiated by the Works Progress Administration. During World War II, the installation functioned as a bomber and crew training base for B-24 aircraft and fighters. In 1948, the facility was transferred to the Georgia Air National Guard and renamed Travis Field in honor of Brigadier General Robert F. Travis and Colonel William Travis.

The Georgia Air National Guard operates the base, which hosts the 165th Airlift Wing (165 AW). The 165 AW is under the operational claimancy of the Air Mobility Command. Stationed units include the 165 AW, the Georgia ANG Combat Readiness Training Center, and the Air Dominance Center. The wing maintains a mission of tactical airlift. The base is staffed by over 310 full-time Active Guard and Reserve and Air Reserve Technician personnel, along with over 700 part-time Drill Status Guardsmen.

Infrastructure at the installation consists of more than 145 buildings on 239 acres of leased land located in the southeast and northeast quadrants of the airport. The 165 AW operates C-130J Super Hercules tactical airlift aircraft. The base also serves as the site for the Air Dominance Center.
