Description

North Auxiliary Airfield is located in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, three miles east of the town of North. It is a component of Joint Base Charleston. The United States Army Air Forces established the facility between 1942 and 1945. In 1943, it operated as a satellite airfield for Columbia Army Air Base, supporting B-25 Mitchell medium bomber training for the III Air Support Command. During this period, the 74th Station Complement Squadron maintained the facility, which also served as a testing site for the Hughes Aircraft Company. Post-World War II jurisdiction of the airfield transitioned between Fort Jackson, the 363rd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Shaw Air Force Base, and the United States Department of Energy. The 437th Airlift Wing at Charleston Air Force Base assumed real property jurisdiction and control of the installation on October 1, 1979.

The airfield is owned by the Department of Defense and operated by the United States Air Force under Air Mobility Command. Its primary role is supporting C-17 Globemaster III training for the 437th Airlift Wing and its reserve associate, the 315th Airlift Wing. The 628th Civil Engineer Squadron maintains a permanent detachment at the site for airfield operations and maintenance. Other military units utilize the facility through coordination with the 628th Air Base Wing.

The installation covers 2,400 acres, including 1,150 acres of undeveloped land. Infrastructure consists of a main runway and an assault runway. Facilities include a permanent aircraft rescue and firefighting station and an air traffic control tower. The tower is staffed for specific military flight operations, though the facility is otherwise designated as an uncontrolled airport.
