Description

The Orbiter is a family of compact unmanned aerial vehicles produced by Aeronautics Defense Systems of Israel for military and security use. Designed for "over the hill" reconnaissance, low-intensity conflict, urban warfare and close-range ISTAR tasks, the type has been in use in the Middle East since its introduction and has been exported to more than a dozen countries. A dedicated loitering munition derivative, the Orbiter 1K "Kingfisher", was announced in 2015.

Development

Aeronautics Defense Systems developed the Orbiter as a mini-UAV system operated at unit level, with successive Orbiter 2, 3 and 4 variants entering production. In May 2015 the company announced the Orbiter 1K "Kingfisher", a version with a fuselage adapted to carry a 2 kg (4.4 lb) explosive payload, converting the airframe into a loitering munition. Aeronautics declared the armed loitering variant operational in August 2016. Azerbaijan established a local plant for Orbiter-3 manufacture.

Design

The Orbiter is a compact, lightweight airframe recovered by parachute; an example that crashed in Texas in 2010 deployed its parachute during descent and caused no damage on impact. The Orbiter 1K carries an electro-optical/infrared sensor and has an endurance of two to three hours. Its acoustic signature is low enough that, according to the manufacturer, the aircraft "is not detected until two seconds before it starts its kill dive".

Armament

Only the Orbiter 1K is armed, carrying a 2 kg explosive payload with a purpose-designed warhead in place of the standard reconnaissance fuselage. The aircraft can be flown onto a target by an operator or given a waypoint, after which it scans the area autonomously to detect and attack stationary or moving targets. If no target is found, the Orbiter 1K can return to base and land for reuse.

Operational History

The Orbiter 1K was employed by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. In 2017 Aeronautics Limited faced fraud charges and alleged violations of Israeli export control law after company personnel were found to have "demonstrated" the loitering munition by conducting an actual strike on Armenian positions. An Orbiter operated by Mexican federal authorities malfunctioned on 17 December 2010 during a surveillance flight, crossed into United States airspace and came down at El Paso, Texas, where it was recovered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. An Orbiter was observed over Ukraine on 17 November 2022, and Iranian media claimed the interception of an Orbiter over Hormozgan province during the 2026 Iran war, an incident Israel said it had no knowledge of. Operators include Azerbaijan, Croatia (six Orbiter 3B), Finland, Greece, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Peru, Poland (11 sets), Serbia (10 sets), Singapore, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Turkmenistan, the United States, the United Kingdom (three on order) and Vietnam.
