Description
The Tecnam P2002 is a two-seat, single-engine light aircraft designed by Luigi Pascale and produced by the Italian manufacturer Tecnam at Capua. Introduced in the early 2000s, it takes its designation from the year of its launch and quickly became a staple of the company product line. It is offered as a light sport aircraft and in certified form as the P2002-JF, the variant most often chosen for flight schools.
Design
The P2002 is an all-metal low-wing monoplane with a tricycle undercarriage and a large bubble canopy giving excellent visibility. It seats a pilot and one passenger side by side. Power comes from a single Rotax 912 four-cylinder piston engine driving a two-blade fixed-pitch propeller. The airframe is stressed to +6g and -3g, unusually robust for its class, and the type is valued for docile handling, low operating cost and a short takeoff run of around 232 metres.
Operational History
The P2002-JF is used by civilian flying schools across Europe and by several air forces as a low-cost screening and ab-initio trainer, a role in which its running costs are a fraction of those of a turboprop. The Hellenic Air Force operates the type at Tatoi for initial pilot selection. One Hellenic Air Force P2002 crashed at Tatoi Airport in October 2025, injuring both pilots.
