Egypt Army

The Egyptian Ground Forces constitute the primary land component of the Egyptian Armed Forces. Operational command is exercised through the General Command of the Armed Forces in Cairo, directing two field armies and four military regions. The Second Field Army is headquartered in Ismaïlia and the Third Field Army in Suez, both overseeing forces deployed across the Suez Canal zone and the Sinai Peninsula. The remaining territory is divided into the Central Military Region headquartered in Cairo, the Northern Military Region in Alexandria, the Western Military Region in Mersa Matruh, and the Southern Military Region in Assiut. Combat formations comprise armored divisions, mechanized infantry divisions, independent armored and infantry brigades, field artillery brigades, the Republican Guard Division, and specialized units including airborne and El-Sa'ka commando forces.

Armored formations operate M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks alongside M60A1, M60A3, and modified Soviet-legacy models such as the T-62 and Ramses II. Mechanized and motorized units utilize YPR-765 and M113 series armored personnel carriers, BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, and Fahd wheeled carriers, complemented by domestically designed vehicles such as the Sena 200 tracked platform and Temsaah series mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles. Field artillery units operate M109 self-propelled howitzers, K9A1 EGY Thunder self-propelled howitzers, towed D-30 and M-46 guns, and multiple launch rocket systems including BM-21 Grad variants. Maneuver units incorporate organic air defense detachments equipped with mobile short-range missile systems, anti-aircraft guns, and man-portable air defense systems, while fixed area defense is maintained by the separate Egyptian Air Defense Forces. Operational air support and troop transport are provided by rotary-wing units of the Egyptian Air Force.

Primary operational duties involve counterinsurgency campaigns in the northern Sinai Peninsula, internal security enforcement, and border surveillance along the western frontier with Libya and southern border with Sudan. Defense industrial modernization focuses on expanding domestic manufacturing and localizing foreign military hardware through state-owned facilities such as Military Factory 200. Production efforts include domestic assembly of M1A1 Abrams tanks and localized manufacturing of the K9A1 EGY Thunder 155mm self-propelled howitzer, along with associated K10 ammunition resupply and K11 fire-control vehicles. Local development programs produce indigenous platforms including the Sena 200 armored vehicle, ST-100, and Temsaah armored personnel carriers.
