Overview

The British Army operates under Army Headquarters located in Andover, Hampshire, with operational forces assigned to the Field Army. Tactical maneuver elements are organized into three divisions. The 3rd Division, headquartered at Bulford Camp on Salisbury Plain, comprises the 12th Armoured Brigade Combat Team, the 20th Armoured Brigade Combat Team, and the 3rd Deep Reconnaissance Strike Brigade Combat Team. The 1st Division, headquartered in York, oversees light and mechanized forces, including the 4th Light Brigade Combat Team, the 7th Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team, the 11th Security Force Assistance Brigade, and the 16 Air Assault Brigade Combat Team. The 6th Division, headquartered at Upavon, directs cyber, electronic warfare, intelligence, and special operations units, including the Army Special Operations Brigade and its Ranger Regiment. Primary domestic garrisons include Catterick Garrison, Aldershot Garrison, Colchester Garrison, and installations across Salisbury Plain.

Armored units field Challenger 2 main battle tanks, which are undergoing conversion to the Challenger 3 standard equipped with 120mm L55A1 smoothbore guns. Armored reconnaissance and tracked infantry formations operate vehicles from the Ajax family, alongside Warrior infantry fighting vehicles and Bulldog armored personnel carriers. Mechanized infantry units field Boxer 8x8 armored vehicles, supplemented by Foxhound and Mastiff protected patrol vehicles. Field artillery units deploy Archer 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers, AS-90 self-propelled howitzers, L118 Light Guns, and M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems. Air defense capabilities are centered on the Sky Sabre surface-to-air missile system utilizing Common Anti-Air Modular Missiles, alongside Stormer High Velocity Missile systems. Army aviation, controlled via the Army Air Corps from bases at Wattisham Airfield and Middle Wallop, operates AH-64E Apache attack helicopters and Wildcat AH1 reconnaissance helicopters.

The British Army maintains forward operational deployments in Eastern Europe as part of NATO deterrence efforts, leading a multinational battlegroup in Estonia under Operation Cabrit and contributing forces to Poland. Permanent overseas garrisons are situated in British Overseas Territories and sovereign bases, including Akrotiri and Dhekelia in Cyprus, Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands, and Gibraltar. Overseas training support units are maintained at the British Army Training Unit Kenya in Nanyuki, the British Army Training Support Unit Belize, and training facilities in Oman. Personnel are also deployed on United Nations peacekeeping missions, including commitments in South Sudan and Somalia.

Modernization programs focus on structural updates and platform re-equipment under the Future Soldier framework. Armored regiments are receiving Challenger 3 tanks, while reconnaissance and mechanized units continue accepting deliveries of the Ajax vehicle family and Boxer 8x8 armored vehicles to replace legacy platforms. To upgrade indirect fire assets, the army integrated Archer self-propelled howitzers and selected the Remote Controlled Howitzer 155 system for long-term replacement of legacy self-propelled artillery. Ground-based air defense has transitioned to the Sky Sabre system, while Army Aviation has completed the transition of its attack helicopter fleet to the AH-64E Apache standard.
