Hungary Army

Command of the Hungarian Ground Forces is executed through the Joint Operations Command headquartered in Székesfehérvár under the direction of the Ministry of Defence. Combat formations include the 1st Armored Brigade Klapka György located in Tata, the 5th Infantry Brigade Bocskai István headquartered in Debrecen, and the 30th Armored Infantry Brigade Kinizsi Pál stationed in Hódmezővásárhely. Special operations forces fall under the 2nd Special Operations Brigade Vitéz Bertalan Árpád based in Szolnok. Regional voluntary reserve units are organized under the Territorial Defence Forces Command, maintaining an administrative presence across local military districts.

Armored units operate Leopard 2A7HU main battle tanks, alongside Leopard 2A4HU variants used for crew training. Mechanized infantry units field Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles, while motorized infantry units utilize BTR-80 and BTR-80A armored personnel carriers and Gidran four-wheel-drive protected vehicles. Tactical transport and utility roles are filled by Oshkosh M-ATV and HMMWV vehicles. Field artillery relies on PzH 2000 155 mm self-propelled howitzers. Ground-based air defense integration includes NASAMS surface-to-air missile systems and Mistral man-portable air defense launchers. Primary infantry weapons include CZ Bren 2 assault rifles, Carl Gustaf M4 recoilless rifles, and Spike LR2 anti-tank guided missiles.

Modernization programs focus on transitioning from legacy Soviet-designed equipment to NATO-standard hardware through foreign procurements and localized domestic manufacturing. A manufacturing plant in Zalaegerszeg produces Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles and develops specialized variants, including self-propelled air defense systems fitted with Skyranger 30 turrets. Fleet deliveries of Leopard 2A7HU tanks and PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzers concluded in late 2025. Support vehicle acquisitions include Gidran four-wheel-drive armored vehicles, Wisent 2 armored recovery vehicles, and Leguan bridge-laying systems.

Primary missions comprise territorial defense, border security, and international alliance commitments. Ground force personnel have accumulated combat experience during international deployments in Iraq under Multinational Force Iraq and in Afghanistan under the International Security Assistance Force and Resolute Support Mission. Operational deployments include peacekeeping contingents in Kosovo under the NATO-led KFOR mission and in Bosnia and Herzegovina under EUFOR Althea, alongside deployments with United Nations forces in Lebanon.
