Profile of MaxxPro
Description
The International M1224 MaxxPro is a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle developed by Navistar Defense. It was designed to meet requirements for the US Marine Corps-led MRAP program and the US Army-led Medium Mine Protected Vehicle program. Development focused on providing a platform capable of surviving improvised explosive device (IED) encounters. Testing commenced in early 2007 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, leading to large-scale production contracts to support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The vehicle features a V-shaped armored crew capsule mounted on an International 7000 chassis, a configuration designed to deflect underbody blasts away from the occupants. To facilitate field maintenance and increase production capacity, the armored body is bolted rather than welded and utilizes standardized components. While the high ground clearance improves blast protection, it raises the center of gravity; to address rollover risks, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was integrated into the fleet starting in 2014. The base model used the DT 530 engine, while subsequent variants received the MaxxForce 10 engine.
Variants include the MaxxPro Plus, which is equipped with dual rear wheels for increased load capacity and Frag Kit 6 armor for protection against explosively formed penetrators (EFPs). The MaxxPro Dash is a smaller, more mobile version with a reduced turning radius and higher torque-to-weight ratio. The MaxxPro XL is a longer Category 2 variant that accommodates up to 10 personnel. Support versions include the MRAP Recovery Vehicle (MRV), which can be equipped with rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) nets, and the Mission Command on the Move (MCOTM), a mobile command post equipped with integrated power generation and surveillance systems.
The MaxxPro is operated by the United States Army, Marine Corps, and Air Force, and has been widely exported. It saw extensive combat use during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The vehicle is utilized by numerous international operators across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, including Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Ukraine. Combat history includes deployment in the Syrian and Yemeni conflicts. Following the 2021 United States withdrawal from Afghanistan, some units were integrated into Taliban military forces. In Ukraine, the vehicle has been used in active combat, with documented instances of destruction and capture. Additionally, several United States law enforcement agencies and the Department of Homeland Security operate the vehicle for domestic roles.
