Cambodia Army

The Royal Cambodian Army functions as the land component of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of National Defence. General headquarters are located in Phnom Penh. Command structure is organized geographically into six military regions: the 1st Military Region headquartered at Stung Treng, 2nd Military Region at Kampong Cham, 3rd Military Region at Kampong Speu, 4th Military Region at Siem Reap, 5th Military Region at Battambang, and the Special Military Region encompassing the capital and surrounding provinces. Each military region maintains subordinate provincial military operation zones. Independent formations under direct High Command authority include the Prime Minister's Bodyguard Unit, Brigade 70, and the 911th Special Forces Airborne Brigade based at Kambol in Kandal Province. Ground forces are organized into infantry divisions, intervention divisions, and specialized brigades.

Infantry formations form the primary ground combat element, supported by integrated armored, artillery, and air defense units. Armored units operate T-55, Type 59, and Type 59D main battle tanks, alongside Type 62 light tanks and Type 63 amphibious light tanks. Mechanized and motorized units utilize BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles, BTR-60 and OT-64 armored personnel carriers, BRDM-2 reconnaissance vehicles, and CS/VN3 armored vehicles. Field artillery assets include towed D-30 and M-46 howitzers, supplemented by BM-21 Grad, Type 81, and Type 90B multiple rocket launchers, as well as SH1 self-propelled howitzers. Air defense capability relies on light anti-aircraft artillery and man-portable air defense systems, including SA-7 and FN-6 missiles.

Primary missions center on territorial defense along international borders with Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam, internal security, and border surveillance. Cambodian ground forces have engaged in border skirmishes along contested frontier zones, including the northern border area surrounding the Preah Vihear sanctuary. Outside national borders, the army contributes engineering, mine-clearance, and medical units to United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa and the Middle East, including deployments to Lebanon, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Army modernization relies on bilateral defense agreements and procurement from China. Deliveries have included Type 59D main battle tanks, wheeled armored personnel carriers, tactical vehicles, self-propelled artillery systems, rocket launchers, and anti-tank guided missiles.
