Romania Army

The Romanian Land Forces, designated Forțele Terestre Române, are commanded through the Land Forces Staff headquartered in Bucharest. Command structures incorporate Headquarters Multinational Corps South-East in Sibiu, the 2nd Infantry Division Getica headquartered in Buzău, and the 4th Infantry Division Gemina headquartered in Cluj-Napoca. Tactical formations include the 1st Mechanized Brigade Argedava in Bucharest, the 2nd Mountain Troops Brigade Sarmizegetusa in Brașov, the 9th Mechanized Brigade Mărășești in Constanța, the 15th Mechanized Brigade Podu Înalt in Iași, the 81st Mechanized Brigade General Grigore Bălan in Bistrița, the 282nd Armored Brigade Unirea Principatelor in Focșani, the Multinational Brigade South-East in Craiova, and the 8th Tactical Operational Missile Brigade in Focșani. Special operations units are organized under the Special Operations Forces Command headquartered in Târgu Mureș.

Combat arms include armored, mechanized infantry, mountain, artillery, engineer, and air defense units. Armored units operate TR-85 and TR-85M1 Bizonul main battle tanks. Mechanized infantry units field MLI-84M Jderul tracked infantry fighting vehicles alongside Piranha III and Piranha V 8x8 armored personnel carriers, TAB-77 wheeled armored vehicles, and Joint Light Tactical Vehicles. Artillery formations field M142 HIMARS and LAROM multiple rocket launcher systems, APR-40 rocket launchers, 152mm Model 1981 towed howitzers, and 122mm Model 1989 self-propelled howitzers. Ground air defense relies on Gepard self-propelled anti-aircraft guns, Oerlikon 35mm twin guns, Chiron man-portable air defense systems, and SA-6 and SA-8 surface-to-air missile systems.

Procurement programs focus on upgrading ground platforms to NATO standards and expanding domestic manufacturing capacity through Uzina Mecanică București. Foreign acquisitions include M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks from the United States, K9 Thunder 155mm self-propelled howitzers and K10 ammunition resupply vehicles from South Korea, and additional Piranha V 8x8 armored vehicles. Modernization of short-range air defense involves Oerlikon GDF systems upgraded with Skynex fire control nodes. In 2025 and 2026, the defense ministry structured contracts for tracked infantry fighting vehicles and additional Iveco High Mobility tactical logistics trucks with partial domestic production.

Primary operations involve territorial defense along the Black Sea coast and operational integration with NATO forward land forces. Historical combat experience includes past multinational operational deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Current international commitments include military police and reconnaissance detachments deployed to Kosovo Force and Operation Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as air defense detachments integrated into the NATO forward presence battle group in Poland.
