Saudi Arabia Army

The Royal Saudi Land Forces operate under the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff. Operational management is structured into regional commands, including the Northern, Northwestern, Eastern, Western, Southern, and Central commands. Primary base infrastructure centers on military cantonments, including King Khalid Military City near Hafar al-Batin, King Abdulaziz Military City at Tabuk, King Fahd Military City at Dhahran, and installations at Khamis Mushayt and Sharurah. Operational ground formations consist of armored brigades, mechanized infantry brigades, an airborne brigade, army aviation brigades, and independent artillery groups.

Ground combat capabilities center on armored and mechanized forces. Armored formations operate M1A2S Abrams and M60A3 main battle tanks. Mechanized units employ M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, AMX-10P tracked vehicles, and M113 series armored personnel carriers. Tactical mobility is supported by wheeled platforms, including LAV-25 armored vehicles. Fire support is provided by tube artillery, including M109, PLZ-45, and CAESAR self-propelled howitzers, alongside M198 towed howitzers. Rocket artillery capabilities utilize ASTROS II multiple launch rocket systems. Army aviation operates AH-64D/E Apache attack helicopters, UH-60M Black Hawk utility helicopters, and CH-47F Chinook transport helicopters. Tactical air defense for ground units includes mobile surface-to-air missile systems such as Avenger and Shahine.

Operational missions focus on territorial defense and border security along the southern boundary. Combat experience includes participation in international coalition operations during the Gulf War and extended border defense and combat operations in regions adjacent to Yemen. Defense modernization programs focus on localizing military manufacturing through Saudi Arabian Military Industries and the Military Industries Corporation. Local initiatives encompass domestic assembly of armored platforms, light tactical vehicles, and small arms, including licensed production of G36 and AK-103 rifles. Domestic development efforts include the SAMI 8x8 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzer. Foreign acquisitions continue through logistics support contracts and procurement programs for tank overhauls, infantry vehicle maintenance, and aviation sustainment.
