Singapore Army

The Singapore Army is the ground force branch of the Singapore Armed Forces, commanded by the Chief of Army from Headquarters Singapore Army. Operational formations consist of combined arms divisions, including the 3rd Division headquartered at Jurong Camp, the 6th Division at Mandai Camp, and the 9th Division/Infantry at Pasir Laba Camp. Homeland defense and infrastructure protection are assigned to the 2nd People's Defence Force, based at Clementi Camp. Armor units are based at Sungei Gedong Camp, while artillery formations are centered at Khatib Camp. Specialized support formations include the Army Intelligence Command, Army Combat Support Command, and Combat Service Support Command.

Armored units operate Leopard 2SG main battle tanks alongside Hunter Armoured Fighting Vehicles and Bionix infantry fighting vehicles. Motorized and light infantry units utilize Terrex 8x8 infantry carrier vehicles, Peacekeeper protected response vehicles, and Belrex protected combat support vehicles. Dismounted infantry sections carry the SAR 21 assault rifle and MATADOR anti-armor weapons. Artillery formations operate SSPH-1 Primus 155mm self-propelled howitzers, M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, Pegasus 155mm lightweight towed howitzers, and FH-88 towed howitzers. Ground-based air defense is integrated under the Republic of Singapore Air Force Air Defence and Operations Command, while aviation support is provided by air force transport and attack helicopter squadrons.

Modernization programs rely on domestic production by ST Engineering in collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Agency, alongside foreign procurements. Locally developed platforms include the Hunter Armoured Fighting Vehicle, which features an integrated combat cockpit, drive-by-wire controls, a 30mm Mk44 Bushmaster cannon, and Spike anti-tank guided missiles. ST Engineering also manufactures the Terrex wheeled vehicle family, the Bronco all-terrain tracked carrier, and the SSPH-1 Primus self-propelled howitzer. Foreign equipment programs include the procurement and upgrade of German Leopard 2 main battle tanks to the Leopard 2SG standard and the acquisition of M142 HIMARS launchers from the United States.

Primary missions encompass territorial defense, island security, counter-terrorism support, and humanitarian assistance operations. The army has taken part in multinational peace support and coalition missions, deploying military observers and support personnel to United Nations operations in East Timor and Kuwait. Units participated in international coalition operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, where teams operated weapon locating radars and provided imagery analysis and medical support. The force conducts humanitarian assistance and disaster relief deployments across Southeast Asia, including Operation Flying Eagle following the Indian Ocean tsunami.
