Greek Air Force F-16 Crash-Lands in Flames at Zakynthos After In-Flight Fire
A Hellenic Air Force F-16C caught fire in flight and made an emergency landing at Zakynthos International Airport on July 9, 2026; the pilot escaped unhurt but the jet was engulfed in flames on the runway.
A Hellenic Air Force F-16C Fighting Falcon caught fire in flight and crash-landed at Zakynthos International Airport on July 9, 2026, shutting down the tourist-island runway during the peak summer travel season.
The aircraft, assigned to the 116th Combat Wing, had just taken off from Araxos Air Base near Patras when the fire broke out, according to The Daily Beast, which cited Greek media reports. Flames were reportedly visible beneath the jet during its approach and the aircraft remained engulfed after touching down at Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH/LGZA); firefighters extinguished the blaze on the runway. The pilot ejected or evacuated safely and was not injured. Aviation Safety Network's 2026 accident database logged the aircraft as a Lockheed Martin F-16C Block-52+ ADV operated by the Hellenic Air Force, with zero fatalities recorded.
The wreckage blocked Zakynthos' single runway, delaying and canceling flights at the Ionian island's airport, a major gateway for summer tourists. Investigators suspect a possible landing gear failure, though the cause has not been officially confirmed. Given the extent of the fire damage, the aircraft is presumed a write-off pending a formal assessment.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon, in service since 1979 with more than 4,600 airframes built worldwide, forms the backbone of the Hellenic Air Force's fighter fleet. Greece fields 113 F-16C and 39 F-16D aircraft — one of the largest F-16 fleets in Europe — alongside 24 Dassault Rafale and 24 Mirage 2000-5 fighters, giving Athens one of the region's most diverse combat air arms.
Greek authorities have not announced a timeline for the crash investigation. The runway at Zakynthos was expected to reopen once the wreckage was cleared.
