Description
Bradley Air National Guard Base is located at Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, situated between Hartford and Springfield. The facility originated from a 1940 acquisition of 1,700 acres by the State of Connecticut, which was transferred to the U.S. Army in 1941. The airfield was named in honor of Lt. Eugene M. Bradley of the 64th Pursuit Squadron. Following the commencement of civil use in 1947, the federal government deeded the property to the State of Connecticut in 1948 for dual-use military and commercial operations.
The base is a dual-use facility hosting the 103rd Airlift Wing of the Connecticut Air National Guard. This wing includes the 118th Airlift Squadron. Multiple Connecticut Army National Guard units are stationed at the facility, including the 169th Aviation Regiment, the 104th Aviation Regiment, and the 142nd Aviation Regiment. The base also hosts the 103rd Composite Squadron of the Connecticut Wing Civil Air Patrol.
Military operations are centered on 144 acres leased in the southwest corner of the airport. The 103rd Airlift Wing operates C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. Army National Guard units stationed at the base maintain inventories of UH-60 Blackhawk and CH-47 Chinook helicopters, as well as C-12 Huron fixed-wing aircraft. Infrastructure includes a Federal Inspection Station within the International Arrivals Building, an Embraer maintenance and repair facility, and dedicated cargo terminals. The airport functions as a regional cargo hub.
