HMAS Albatross (NAS Nowra)

HMAS Albatross, also known as Naval Air Station Nowra, is located near Nowra, New South Wales. It is operated by the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and serves as the main naval air station and primary shore base for the Fleet Air Arm.

The airfield site was identified in 1938 and completed in June 1941. The base was formally established in May 1942 as RAAF Nowra, initially hosting Royal Australian Air Force Bristol Beaufort torpedo bombers and United States Army Air Forces Martin Marauder bombers. In 1944, the installation was transferred to the Royal Navy, renamed HMS Nabbington, and utilized to support British Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers. Following its return to the RAAF post-war, the airfield was commissioned into the RAN as HMAS Albatross on 31 August 1948. Base facilities, including workshops, test areas, and a control tower, were subsequently expanded to support the entry into service of jet aircraft such as the De Havilland Sea Venom, A-4 Skyhawk, and S-2 Tracker. From 1991 to 2001, Royal New Zealand Air Force A-4 Skyhawks operated from the station to provide air defense support.

HMAS Albatross is the headquarters for the Navy Aviation Group, which coordinates RAN aviation activities. The base hosts five Fleet Air Arm squadrons: 723 Squadron, 725 Squadron, 808 Squadron, 816 Squadron, and 822X Squadron. Aircraft based at the installation include SH-60 Seahawks and S-100 Camcopters. Civilian contractors operate a fleet of Learjets from the base to provide target towing and fleet support missions.

Infrastructure includes the Albatross Aviation Technology Park, the Fleet Air Arm Museum, and the Royal Australian Navy Historic Flight. Numerous lodger units are stationed at the base, encompassing the 453 Squadron Nowra Flight, the Naval Weather and Oceanographic Centre, the Training Authority – Aviation, the Naval Aviation Systems Program Office, the Australian Joint Acoustic Analysis Centre, the RAN Tactical Electronic Warfare Support Section, and the Aircraft Maintenance and Flight Trials Unit. The installation also houses the Australian Defence Force Parachuting School and several Australian military cadet units.
