Description
Icheon Army Airfield, also known as G-510, is an active military installation located in Icheon, South Korea. The airfield is operated by the Republic of Korea Army Aviation. It hosts the headquarters of the Army Aviation Command, an organization established on April 20, 1999, and renamed from the Army Aviation Operations Command on December 1, 2021.
The installation hosts the 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, a subordinate formation of the Army Aviation Command. The brigade was founded as the 1st Aviation Group on September 1, 1973. On June 1, 1978, it was reorganized as the 61st Aviation Group under the newly established 1st Aviation Brigade, at which time the 202nd and 203rd aviation battalions were created to operate UH-1H helicopters. On May 22, 1980, the unit deployed to Gwangju under orders from Brigadier General Song Jin-won to suppress the Gwangju Uprising.
Aviation units at Icheon Army Airfield operate CH-47D Chinook and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. The 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade's 301st and 302nd Aviation Battalions operate the CH-47D. The 601st Aviation Battalion operates the UH-60. The brigade's headquarters element at the airfield includes the 60th Aviation Group, which functions as an Air Command and Control unit. The brigade also commands the 603rd and 605th Aviation Battalions, which operate UH-60 helicopters from detachments garrisoned in Sejong City rather than at the Icheon installation.
