Description
King Faisal Air Base is a Royal Jordanian Air Force installation located near Al-Jafr in the Ma'an Governorate of Jordan. The installation is named after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, who financed its construction.
Construction of the base began in 1974. The first aircraft landed at the facility on 27 November 1980, and King Hussein of Jordan officially opened the base on 24 June 1981.
In 1983, the base was used to assemble components of Chinese Shenyang J-6 fighter aircraft prior to their delivery to Iraq. In 1987, during the Iran–Iraq War, Syrian President Hafez al-Assad and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein flew into the base to attend a meeting in nearby Al-Jafr.
