King Hussein Air Base (Mafraq Air Base)

King Hussein Air Base, also designated Mafraq Air Base and King Hussein Air College, is located 3 kilometers northeast of Mafraq in the Mafraq Governorate of Jordan. The site was initially established in the 1920s by the Royal Air Force as a location for aircraft and armored cars. By 1931, the airfield functioned as a staging and refueling post for international flights, personnel, and freight. In 1951, the station expanded with new buildings and a concrete runway. During British operational control as RAF Mafraq, the installation hosted detachments from RAF Squadrons No. 6, 14, 32, and 249, operating Bristol F.2 Fighters, Vampire FB.5s, and Venom FB.1/4s.

The RAF evacuated the station on May 31, 1957, transferring ownership to the Jordanian government. Renamed King Hussein Air Base in June 1959, the site became operational for the Royal Jordanian Air Force when No. 1 Fighter Squadron equipped with Hawker Hunters and No. 2 Squadron equipped with de Havilland Vampires relocated from Amman. Flying training commenced in 1960 under 4th Squadron using Chipmunk aircraft. Base facilities sustained damage during the 1967 Six-Day War, prompting repairs and a complete renovation completed in 1969. Local pilot training resumed in 1974, leading to the facility's redesignation as King Hussein Air College in 1978. The Junior Command and Staff School was established at the installation in 1979.

The Royal Jordanian Air Force operates the base as its flight training and educational facility. Stationed flying units include 4th Squadron, which conducts basic fixed-wing training; 11th Squadron, which conducts advanced fixed-wing training; 5th Squadron, which conducts helicopter training; and 2nd Squadron. Educational units based at the site include the Flying Instructor School, the Junior Command and Staff School, a technical school for non-commissioned officers, and a university college under the Firas Al-Ajlouni School offering bachelor's degrees in Aviation Sciences. Base infrastructure comprises academic facilities, maintenance infrastructure, hangars, and housing units for 80 families. Security operations are maintained by a ground defense battalion containing a quick response platoon.
