Description
Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon, designated Van Voorhis Field, is located southeast of Fallon, Nevada. Established in 1942 as part of a coastal defensive network, the facility was subsequently transferred to the U.S. Navy for aviation training. The installation operated as a Naval Auxiliary Air Station until January 1, 1972, when the Navy designated it a major aviation command. In 1996, the base became the site for the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN) following its relocation from NAS Miramar.
The U.S. Navy operates the station under the jurisdiction of Navy Region Southwest. It hosts the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC), which integrates TOPGUN, the Carrier Airborne Early Warning Weapons School, and the Navy Rotary Wing Weapons School. NAS Fallon is the home station for Fighter Squadron Composite THIRTEEN (VFC-13), a reserve adversary unit. The base also supports Navy SEAL and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) training. SAR responsibilities are managed by the Navy Rotary Wing Weapons School.
The installation manages the Fallon Range Training Complex (FRTC), which encompasses 240,000 acres of bombing and electronic warfare ranges. This infrastructure includes a simulated air defense network in Dixie Valley equipped with approximately 20 operational radar installations. Support facilities include specialized hangars, academic buildings, and a ramp area constructed to accommodate consolidated training commands. The station operates aircraft including F-16 Fighting Falcons and MH-60S Sea Hawks. An AN/FPS-66A search radar, integrated into the Joint Surveillance System, is maintained on the site. The base also houses the Naval Air Station Fallon Air Park museum.
