Description
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. The base is operated by Air Combat Command and serves as the home of the 4th Fighter Wing.
The site was authorized in December 1941 as a U.S. Army Air Corps Technical Training School and was established in 1942. It is named for U.S. Navy Lt. Seymour A. Johnson. The facility was deactivated in May 1946. Reconstruction of the site began in late 1952, and the installation reopened on April 1, 1956, under Tactical Air Command. The 83rd Fighter Day Wing was assigned as the primary unit until December 1957, when the 4th Fighter Day Wing assumed host responsibilities.
The 4th Fighter Wing acts as the host unit, encompassing the 4th Operations Group, 4th Maintenance Group, 4th Medical Group, and 4th Mission Support Group. The base also hosts the 916th Air Refueling Wing of the Air Force Reserve Command and the 414th Fighter Group, a geographically separated unit subordinate to the 944th Fighter Wing. Other based units include the 567th RED HORSE Squadron.
The base operates F-15E Strike Eagle and KC-46A Pegasus aircraft. The 4th Operations Group maintains the 333d, 334th, 335th, and 336th Fighter Squadrons, which operate the F-15E Strike Eagle. The 414th Fighter Group's 307th Fighter Squadron also operates the F-15E Strike Eagle. Air refueling capabilities are provided by the 916th Operations Group through the 77th and 911th Air Refueling Squadrons, which operate the KC-46A Pegasus. Infrastructure includes maintenance facilities for the fighter and refueling wings, such as the 4th and 916th Maintenance Groups and their respective generation and munitions squadrons.
