Description
Pohang Air Base, also known as Pohang Gyeongju Airport and historically designated as K-3, is a joint civil-military facility located in South Korea. The airfield was originally developed under Japanese colonial rule. During the Korean War, the United States Air Force utilized the installation and stationed the 35th Fighter-Interceptor Group there. The facility was established in its current dual-use capacity in 1970.
The Korea Airports Corporation manages the civil side of the airport, while the military sector is operated by Republic of Korea Navy Aviation and the United States Navy. The base serves as the headquarters of the ROK Navy's Naval Air Command, which was established in July 2022 following the organizational upgrade of the former 6th Naval Air Wing. The Naval Air Command operates P-8 Poseidon and AW159 Wildcat aircraft across its distributed installations at Pohang, Mokpo, and Jinhae.
The installation hosts a forward-deployed detachment of the United States Navy Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14 (HM-14). Relocated to Pohang from Iwakuni, Japan, in October 2008, the HM-14 detachment operates MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters to conduct airborne mine countermeasures for the US 7th Fleet.
