Description
Pryluky Air Base is located in Chernihiv Oblast, Ukraine, six kilometers west of Pryluky. The facility served as the base for the Tupolev Tu-160 bomber fleet.
In April 1946, the 184th Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment (184 GvTBAP) arrived at the installation after being renamed from the 9th Guards Long-Range Regiment. The unit operated Tu-4 aircraft beginning in 1950 and transitioned to the Tu-16 in 1955. In 1984, the regiment acquired the Tu-22M4 and later accepted the first Soviet Tu-160 in April 1987. The base also hosted Tu-134UBL trainers. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the 184th GvTBAP maintained a fleet of Tu-160 bombers. Between October 1999 and February 2000, eight of these aircraft were transferred to Russia. The final Tu-160 at the base was destroyed in February 2001 under an agreement with the United States.
The air base is currently abandoned. As of 2012, most technical equipment, including radar and lighting systems, has been dismantled. The infrastructure originally included revetments for 20 large aircraft. Earthen revetments, bomb shelters, and two fuel and lubricant depots were destroyed at the request of the United States. A Tupolev Tu-16 remains at the site as a monument.
