Description
Vasylkiv Air Base is located near Vasylkiv in the Kyiv Oblast of Ukraine. At the start of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, the airfield hosted the 36th Fighter Aviation Division of the Air Defence Forces, which included the 2nd, 43rd, 254th, and 255th Fighter Aviation Regiments. The 146th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (146 Gv IAP) arrived at the base in 1950, operating MiG-25PD aircraft. This regiment was subordinate to the 19th Air Defence Division, which was reorganized as the 49th Air Defence Corps in 1989 within the 8th Air Defence Army. Ukraine assumed control of the 146th Gv IAP on June 1, 1992, and disbanded the unit on June 1, 1993. The 92nd Red Banner Fighter Aviation Regiment, operating MiG-29s, transferred to the base from Mukachevo in 1993 and was disbanded in 1994.
The Ukrainian Air Force operates the base, which hosts the 40th Tactical Aviation Brigade. The installation was a site of combat during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine as part of the Kyiv offensive. Russian missile strikes on March 12, 2022, damaged the facility and its airstrip. The base hosts squadrons of MiG-29 fighter aircraft and L-39 Albatros trainers.
