Ozerne Air Base (Flughafen Hegewald)

Ozerne is a Ukrainian Air Force installation situated near Ozerne in the Zhytomyr Oblast. Recognized in United States intelligence records as Zhitomir/Skomorokhi and known by various designations including Zhytomyr Ozerna and Ozernyy, the site was established by the Red Army in 1933. The German Luftwaffe expanded the facility in 1942, designating it Flughafen Hegewald. During the German occupation, the base was surrounded by the Hegewald colony and situated near the headquarters of Heinrich Himmler.

From 1945 to 1994, the base hosted the 15th Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Division. The 341st Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment operated from the facility starting in 1950, receiving Tupolev Tu-22 aircraft in 1965 and Tu-22PD variants in 1968. By 1990, the division included the 121st and 203rd Guards Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiments and the 341st Heavy Bomber Aviation Regiment. The 894th Fighter Aviation Regiment also operated from the site under the 8th Air Defence Army. Following the 1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union, the facility and its personnel were transferred to the Ukrainian Air Force.

The 39th Tactical Aviation Brigade has operated from the base since 2018. The unit utilizes Sukhoi Su-27UB and Aero L-39C Albatross aircraft for tactical aviation operations.

Infrastructure at the installation includes facilities for tactical aviation and historical support for heavy bomber units. The airfield contains an apron for aircraft parking and has historically housed an army salvage yard on its northern perimeter.
