Overview

The ground forces of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces operate under three territorial commands: the Northern Zone headquartered at Hoceima, the Eastern Zone headquartered at Errachidia, and the Southern Zone headquartered at Agadir. Combat formations include Royal Armored brigades, mechanized infantry brigades, motorized infantry regiments, airborne infantry brigades, Royal Artillery groups, and specialized mountain infantry battalions. Territorial defense is further supported by border surveillance battalions and light intervention units. Ground forces maintain continuous static defense, electronic surveillance, and mobile patrols along the sand berm in Western Sahara. Operational commitments also encompass counter-smuggling and border monitoring along eastern and southern frontiers. Internationally, ground personnel deploy to United Nations peacekeeping operations, including the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic.

Armored units operate M1A1 SA and M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks alongside VT-1A, M60A3 TTS, and M48A5 battle tanks, supplemented by SK-105 Kรผrassier light tanks. Mechanized and motorized infantry units field M113 and AIFV tracked armored personnel carriers, as well as VAB, Ratel 20/90, and Cobra II wheeled armored vehicles. Light reconnaissance and anti-tank units employ AMX-10RC wheeled armored vehicles, AML-60 and AML-90 armored cars, M-ATV mine-resistant ambush protected vehicles, and VAMTAC light utility vehicles. Infantry anti-armor capabilities rely on TOW, Milan, HJ-8, Kornet, and Javelin anti-tank guided missile platforms mounted on light tactical vehicles or operated by dismounted crews.

Artillery groups field self-propelled 155 mm systems including M109, truck-mounted CAESAR, and ATMOS 2000 howitzers, alongside L118, M101, and M114 towed guns, complemented by MO-120-RT heavy mortars. Rocket artillery units employ PULS, HIMARS, PHL-03, and WS-2D multiple launch rocket systems. Ground-based air defense is integrated into field formations and dedicated air defense regiments, utilizing long-range FD-2000, medium-range Sky Dragon 50 and MIM-23 Hawk systems, and short-range 2K22 Tunguska self-propelled gun-missile systems, M163 VADS, and Sherpa tactical vehicles fitted with Mistral 3 launchers and 20 mm cannons. Rotary-wing air support is provided by AH-64E Apache Guardian and SA342 Gazelle attack helicopters. Ground forces modernization focuses on expanding long-range air defense coverage, artillery digitization, acquiring mobile counter-drone systems, and establishing domestic assembly facilities for military ground vehicles in Berrechid through foreign technology transfer agreements.
