Description
The MAM-L is a smart micro munition developed as part of the Mini Akıllı Mühimmat family. Designed for low-payload-capacity air platforms, including unmanned aerial vehicles and light attack aircraft, the munition is based on the L-UMTAS missile system.
The weapon is designed to engage stationary and moving targets, deploying from aerial platforms such as the Bayraktar Akıncı, Bayraktar TB2, TAI Aksungur, TAI Anka, TAI Hürkuş, and Vestel Karayel. The baseline variant utilizes a semi-active laser seeker for guidance. An alternative variant, the MAM-L IIR, is equipped with an imaging infrared seeker and a radio frequency datalink. Available warheads include tandem charges optimized against reactive armor, high-explosive blast fragmentation, and thermobaric options, which function via impact and proximity fuzing. A specialized variant, designated NESTER, is configured for point target elimination; it contains no explosive payload and instead utilizes a proximity sensor to deploy cutting blades just before impact to limit collateral damage.
The munition is widely deployed and has been exported to several countries. Current operators include Albania, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Croatia, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Mali, Pakistan, Poland, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine. The system has been used in combat during Operation Euphrates Shield, Operation Olive Branch, Operation Spring Shield, Operation Claw, the 2019 offensive into north-eastern Syria, the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War, the Central Libya offensive, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Tigray War, and the Mali War.
