Description
Deveselu Air Base, now designated as the 99th Military Base (Baza Militară 99), is located in Deveselu, Olt County. Construction of the facility began in 1952 with assistance from the Soviet Union. The site was the location of Romania's first supersonic flight by a MiG-19. In 1962, it became the first Romanian base to receive MiG-21F-13 fighters, which equipped a squadron of the 91st Fighter Aviation Regiment. By the 1980s, the base housed four squadrons and was the sole site in Romania conducting night flight missions. The base was disbanded in 2003.
The facility was re-established on May 1, 2012, to support international missile defense operations. It is currently operated by the Romanian Joint Logistics Command and hosts the United States Navy Aegis Ashore Ballistic Missile Defense System. The site consists of three military units: the Romanian 99th Military Base, Naval Support Facility Deveselu, and the Aegis Ashore Defense System Romania. The base is equipped with Mark 41 Vertical Launch Systems configured to deploy SM-3 interceptors for detection and destruction of short, medium, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.
