Description
Boboc Air Base, designated as the Aurel Vlaicu Flight School (Școala de Aplicație pentru Forțele Aeriene "Aurel Vlaicu"), is located in Boboc, Buzău County. The airfield became operational in 1939 and hosted the relocated aviation schools of Tecuci and Buzău starting in 1940. During World War II, the facility was used by the Royal Romanian Air Force. The Aurel Vlaicu Aviation Officers School, established in 1953, moved to the Boboc airfield in 1958. Since 2003, the base has functioned as the training facility for the air force, surface-to-air missile, and radiolocation branches.
The base hosts the Aviation Training Group, comprising the 1st Aviation Squadron and the 2nd Aviation Squadron. The 1st Aviation Squadron operates IAK-52W/TW trainers and IAR 316B helicopters, while the 2nd Aviation Squadron operates the IAR 99 Standard. Additionally, Romanian Land Forces Bayraktar TB2 drones are deployed at the facility. Infrastructure at the installation includes a concrete runway, which underwent modernization in 2007.
