Description

Craiova Air Base is located at Craiova International Airport in Dolj County. Military aviation activity at the site began in 1916 with the establishment of an aerodrome at the Craiova Hippodrome. A 1938 royal decree formally established the airport for dual public and military use. During the Second World War, the base functioned as the headquarters for the 3rd Bomber Flotilla, which operated PZL.23 Karaś, Potez 63, and IAR 37 aircraft.

In 1948, the 2nd Fighter Group moved to the base, operating Bf 109G, IAR 80, and IAR 81 fighters. The 158th Jet Fighter Aviation Regiment arrived in 1952, introducing MiG-15 jet aircraft. This unit was redesignated as the 67th Fighter Aviation Regiment in 1959 and utilized MiG-17F and PF variants. Between 1970 and 2004, the base hosted the 322nd Aviation Maintenance Centre. In 1979, the regiment began operating IAR 93 aircraft. During the 1990s, the unit was reorganized as the 67th Air Base and operated MiG-21 and IAR 99 aircraft. The 67th Air Base was transformed into the 67th Advanced Operational Training and Flight Test Center in 2001 before its disbandment in 2003.

The military facility currently hosts the Center for Research, Innovation and Flight Tests (CCIIZ), responsible for the research, development, testing, and evaluation of aeronautical products for the Romanian Armed Forces.
