Description

The 90th Airlift Base "Comandor Aviator Gheorghe Bănciulescu" is located in Otopeni, 16.5 kilometers north of Bucharest, occupying the military section of Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport. Originally established as a training center for civil and military aviation, the site was utilized by the Luftwaffe during World War II. By 1943, the facility functioned as a Luftwaffe installation in the Bucharest region, equipped with a beam approach system and concrete runways. In August 1944, the airfield was used to conduct air raids against Bucharest before being targeted by the USAAF and subsequently occupied by Romanian forces.

The facility functioned as a Romanian Air Force airfield until 1965, when the site was converted for commercial use. The base is currently operated by the Romanian Air Force and hosts the 90th Airlift Base, which operates C-27J Spartan and C-130 Hercules transport aircraft.
