Description
Kaklıç Air Base is located in Çiğli, İzmir, situated two nautical miles west of Çiğli Air Base. The facility is owned and operated by the Turkish Air Force and serves as a component of the 2nd Main Air Base Flight Education Center Command.
The site was initially planned as a civilian airport to replace the transport functions previously provided by Çiğli Air Base. Construction began under the direction of Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel, but the military seized the nearly completed facility following the 1980 coup d'état. The base transitioned to military use while civilian airport development shifted to the site of the current İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport.
The base hosts the 123rd Fleet (Palaz) and the 125th Fleet (Azman). Aircraft operated at the installation include SF.260D and Super Mushshak trainers utilized by the 123rd Fleet, and CN-235M-100 transport aircraft and UH-1H Iroquois helicopters assigned to the 125th Fleet. The primary role of the base is the support of flight education and training operations.
