Description
Mürted Airfield Command is located 35 kilometers northwest of Ankara, Turkey. The facility opened in 1960 to provide defense for the capital, having been allocated to the United States in 1950. Originally designated Mürted Air Base, the installation was renamed Akıncı Air Base in 1993 before reverting to its original name in September 2016. Between 1965 and 1996, the base hosted United States Air Force munitions support units, including the 7393rd and 739th Munitions Support Squadrons. These units operated under the 39th Wing to maintain a nuclear mission, which was deactivated on April 25, 1996.
The facility is operated by the Turkish Air Force. Following a reorganization in 2016, its status was downgraded from an air base to an airfield, and command responsibility was transferred to a group captain. The 4th Air Wing was relocated from the site, and the 141st, 142nd, and 143rd squadrons were deactivated. The aircraft formerly stationed at the base, including F-16C/D fighters, were transferred to the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Air Wings. The airfield currently hosts Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) facilities.
Infrastructure at the site includes six operational Weapons Storage and Security System (WS3) vaults maintained in stand-by status. The facility previously housed the 143rd "Öncel" training squadron, which was the first Turkish unit to operate F-16C/D aircraft. During the July 2016 coup d'état attempt, the base served as the command center for pro-coup forces. In response, government F-4E/2020 aircraft bombed the runway thresholds to prevent further flight operations. This event resulted in the relocation of assigned wing assets and the subsequent renaming of the installation.
