Description

Joint Forces Training Base – Los Alamitos (JFTB) is located in Los Alamitos, California, and occupies 1,319 acres. Established in 1942 as Naval Air Reserve Base Los Alamitos, the facility provided training for U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilots and supported fleet carrier air groups. In 1943, it was redesignated Naval Air Station (NAS) Los Alamitos. Following World War II, its mission shifted to supporting Naval Air Reserve units. In July 1957, the airfield was the departure point for Project Bullet, a transcontinental air speed record flight conducted by Major John H. Glenn Jr. in an F8U-1P Crusader. Operational control of the airfield transferred to the California Army National Guard in 1973, followed by control of the entire installation in 1977. The current designation was adopted in 2000.

The base is operated by the U.S. Army and controlled by the California National Guard. It supports 850 full-time employees and more than 6,000 National Guard and Reserve troops. The 40th Infantry Division (Mechanized) serves as the senior command on post. Stationed units include Company A, 1st Battalion (Assault), 140th Aviation Regiment, along with various federal reserve component units.

The Los Alamitos Army Airfield includes two runways and the Anderson Drop Zone. The base operates Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawks. Training infrastructure includes an Engagement Skills Trainer, Virtual Convoy Operations Trainer, HMMWV Egress Assistance Trainer, Laser Marksmanship Training System, and a Close Combat Tactical Trainer. Additional facilities include an Olympic-size Aquatics Training Center and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) billeting and banquet halls.
