Description

Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, also known as Munn Field, is a United States Marine Corps airfield located within Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton near Oceanside, California. Established in 1942 as an auxiliary landing field for Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, the site was designated a permanent establishment in September 1944. During World War II, it served as an Outlying Field to Marine Corps Auxiliary Field Gillespie and hosted squadrons including VMO-5, VMF-323, and VMF-471. Following the war, Marine Observation Squadron FIVE (VMO-5) was established at the airfield in 1966, operating OV-10 Bronco and UH-1 Huey aircraft. The facility was redesignated as Marine Corps Air Facility Pendleton on September 1, 1978, and transitioned to its current status as a Marine Corps Air Station on April 1, 1985. The airfield's secondary name honors Lieutenant General John C. Munn, the first Marine aviator to serve as Commanding General of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

The station is owned by the Department of Defense and operated by the United States Marine Corps under the control of the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The primary resident command is Marine Aircraft Group 39 (MAG-39). Stationed units include Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, which operates the UC-12W Huron in an operational support role. MAG-39 comprises multiple Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadrons, including HMLA-169, HMLA-267, HMLA-369, HMLA-367, HMLA-469, and HMLA-775, along with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Training Squadron 303 (HMLAT-303). These units operate AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom helicopters, with HMLA-775 also utilizing the AH-1W Super Cobra.

The airfield also hosts Marine Medium Tilt-rotor Squadrons VMM-164 and VMM-364, which operate MV-22B Osprey aircraft. Marine Aircraft Group 41 maintains a presence through Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 4 (VMU-4), which operates the RQ-21 Blackjack. Logistics and maintenance functions are conducted by Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39. Infrastructure includes a helicopter rinse facility. The station expanded its facilities in 1999 to accommodate additional helicopter squadrons following the closure of MCAS Tustin and MCAS El Toro.
