Description
Naval Air Station Juanda is located in Sedati District, Sidoarjo, near Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. The land is entirely owned by the Indonesian Navy and functions as a joint-use facility alongside Juanda International Airport. The base's origins date to the early 1960s when the Indonesian government initiated Project Waru to support Operation Trikora. Construction began in 1960, managed by the Waru Project Supervisory Team with French companies Compagnie d'Ingénieurs et Techniciens as consultants and Société de Construction des Batignolles as contractors. The facility became operational in September 1963, marked by the landing of four Indonesian Navy Fairey Gannet aircraft. President Sukarno inaugurated the installation on 12 August 1964, naming it after former Prime Minister Djuanda Kartawidjaja.
The installation operates as a Class A military facility and serves as the headquarters for the Indonesian Navy’s Naval Aviation Center (Puspenerbal). The site also accommodates Muljono Air Force Base, a Type B facility operated by the Indonesian Air Force. Naval Air Station Juanda hosts Air Wing 2, which oversees multiple operational squadrons. The 100th Anti-Submarine Squadron operates AS565 MBe Panther helicopters. The 200th Training Squadron flies the SOCATA TB-9 Tampico, EC120B Colibri, and Beechcraft Bonanza G36. Logistics and transport are handled by the 600th Rapid Logistics Squadron using CASA C-212-200 Aviocar aircraft. The 700th UAV Squadron operates Boeing Insitu MQ-27 ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicles, and the 800th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron flies the CASA CN-235-220 MPA.
Military infrastructure is positioned south of the shared runway and east of the civil airport's Terminal 2. The base contains hangars and maintenance facilities dedicated to supporting the aircraft inventory of the Indonesian Naval Aviation. The site also houses the Naval Aviation Museum, which displays aviation instruments, military uniforms, and full-scale aircraft. Commercial airport operations are managed separately by InJourney Airports as a civil enclave on the military-owned land.
