Description

Naval Station Norfolk is located on the Hampton Roads peninsula at Sewell's Point in Norfolk, Virginia. Established on July 4, 1917, on the site of the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, the facility was developed following the passage of the Military Deficiency Appropriation Bill. A seaplane airfield began operations in October 1917, later becoming Naval Air Station Hampton Roads. The base expanded during World War II with the construction of runways and seaplane ramps to support naval air unit training. In 1946, the Naval Operating Base and Naval Air Station were reorganized under the Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, and the installation was officially designated Naval Station Norfolk in 1953. During the Apollo 7 mission in 1968, the station functioned as Recovery Control Center Atlantic. The separate naval station and air station facilities merged into a single command on February 5, 1999.

The installation serves as the headquarters for United States Fleet Forces Command. Resident commands include United States Second Fleet, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, Navy Warfare Development Command, and Navy Expeditionary Combat Command. The base is the home port for four carrier strike groups—Carrier Strike Groups Two, Eight, Ten, and Twelve—and multiple destroyer squadrons.

Infrastructure consists of waterfront and pier space at Sewell's Point and the adjacently operated Chambers Field. The airfield includes an Air Mobility Command terminal and aircraft hangars. The station hosts various aircraft types, including squadrons of MH-60 Seahawk and MH-53E Sea Dragon helicopters. Naval assets homeported at the facility include Nimitz-class and Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers, amphibious assault ships, and guided missile destroyers. Submarine squadrons based at the station operate Los Angeles-class and Virginia-class attack submarines. The installation also hosts Military Sealift Command vessels, including replenishment oilers, dry cargo ships, and hospital ships.
