Description
Marine Corps Air Station New River is located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The site was originally tobacco farmland purchased in 1941 and selected for development by Captain Barnett Robinson to support amphibious operations. The installation received its first squadron, VMSB-331, in March 1943. It was officially commissioned as Marine Corps Auxiliary Airfield Camp Lejeune on April 26, 1944. Following a period in caretaker status after World War II, the base was reactivated in 1951 as Marine Corps Air Facility Peterfield Point. It was renamed Marine Corps Air Facility New River in 1952 and became Marine Corps Air Station (Helicopter) New River in 1968. In 1972, the airfield was named McCutcheon Field for General Keith B. McCutcheon.
The station is operated by the United States Marine Corps under the control of Marine Corps Installations – East. It serves as a helicopter and tilt-rotor base and is the garrison for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Primary units stationed at the facility include Marine Aircraft Group 26 and Marine Aircraft Group 29. Other based units include elements of Marine Air Control Group 28 and a detachment of Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron 1. The installation also hosts United States Navy and United States Air Force training detachments, including the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training and the 362nd Training Squadron.
MCAS New River operates various rotary-wing and tilt-rotor aircraft. Marine Aircraft Group 26 operates multiple squadrons of MV-22B Osprey aircraft. Marine Aircraft Group 29 operates squadrons of CH-53E Super Stallion and CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopters, as well as AH-1Z Viper and UH-1Y Venom light attack helicopters. In January 2022, HMH-461 became the first operational Marine Corps unit to transition from the CH-53E to the CH-53K. The Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron operates the UC-12W Huron. Base infrastructure includes the King Air hangar and Delalio Elementary School, which serves the station's residential community.
