Description
Tiyas Air Base, also known as the T-4 Air Base, is a Syrian Air Force installation located in the Homs Governorate, north of Tiyas and west of Palmyra. It is the largest airbase in Syria.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet Union maintained access to Tiyas Air Base for periodic deployments of naval aircraft. During the Syrian Civil War, the facility was operated by the Syrian Arab Air Force and Iran's Quds Force for operations against ISIL and opposition forces. Iran-backed Shia militias also used the airfield to launch drone operations. In December 2024, members of the Syrian Free Army captured the airbase.
The airbase infrastructure includes aircraft hangars and observation facilities. Syrian Air Force units designated at the base include 1 Squadron and 5 Squadron operating MiG-25PDS/PU/RB variants, 819 Squadron operating Su-24MK2 aircraft, and 827 Squadron operating Su-22M4 aircraft.
