Kuweires Military Aviation Institute

Kuweires Military Aviation Institute is an airbase located in the Aleppo Governorate, Syria, 30 kilometers east of Aleppo, between As-Safira and Dayr Hafir. Constructed with Polish assistance in the late 1960s as the primary air force academy base, it became the home of the Syrian Arab Air Force Military Aviation Institute in 1980.

Rebel forces besieged the airbase in 2012, and ISIS maintained the blockade from late 2013 until Syrian forces, supported by Russian air strikes, lifted the siege on 10 November 2015. Following the siege, the Syrian government repaired the facility and deployed a squadron of Aero L-39 Albatros fighter-bombers alongside a Buk M1 surface-to-air missile system operated by a combined Syrian and Russian military crew. The Military Aviation Institute underwent renovation from 2017 to 2021 before resuming operations. Ukrainian GUR forces attacked Russian personnel at the base on 25 July 2024, targeting an electronic warfare station. On 30 November 2024, forces from the Syrian National Army captured the airbase during Operation Dawn of Freedom, bringing it under the control of the Syrian transitional government.

Infrastructure at the site includes hardened aircraft shelters and specialized facilities for military aviation instruction. The base has hosted pilot training programs, air defense units, electronic warfare systems, and light attack aircraft squadrons.
