Description

Taftanaz Air Base is a military facility located 1.7 miles south of Taftanaz and 1.8 miles east of Ta'um in the Idlib Governorate, Syria. The site has been in use since 1940 and is owned by the Syrian Armed Forces, with operational presence by the Syrian Air Force and the Turkish Air Force.

Prior to its capture by opposition forces, the base hosted two squadrons of Syrian Air Force Mil Mi-8 and Mi-17 Hip helicopters. During the second week of January 2013, Syrian rebel forces led by the Al-Nusra Front and an Ahrar al-Sham battalion overran the facility.

On 6 February 2020, during the Northwestern Syria offensive, the Turkish Armed Forces established a military post within the perimeter of the air base. Syrian Air Force aircraft targeted the installation with airstrikes hours after its construction, and Syrian government forces shelled the base again on 2 March 2020.
