Greece Army

The Hellenic Army is commanded by the Hellenic Army General Staff under the Hellenic National Defence General Staff. The primary operational formation is the First Army, headquartered in Larissa, which oversees the IV Army Corps stationed in Xanthi, Thrace. The IV Army Corps secures the northeastern land border and comprises the 12th Mechanized Infantry Division, 16th Mechanized Infantry Division, and 20th Armored Division. Island and coastal defense in the Aegean Sea is directed by the Supreme Military Command of the Interior and Islands, based in Athens, which commands various island garrison units and National Guard formations. Special operations, marine, and airmobile forces are grouped under the Special Warfare Command and the 1st Infantry Division headquartered in Veria. Logistics and sustainment are managed by the Supreme Military Support Command. Primary operational missions center on national territorial defense along the Evros land border and eastern Aegean island chains. International operational commitments include the permanent deployment of the Hellenic Force in Cyprus, alongside participation in multinational peacekeeping operations such as NATO forces in Kosovo.

Armored units field Leopard 2A6 HEL, Leopard 2A4, Leopard 1A5, and M48A5 MOLF main battle tanks. Mechanized and motorized infantry units operate Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, M113 series tracked armored personnel carriers, ELBO Leonidas II vehicles, and M1117 Armored Security Vehicles. Field and rocket artillery formations deploy PzH 2000 and M109 series self-propelled howitzers, M110A2 heavy self-propelled howitzers, M270 Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, RM-70 rocket artillery, and Spike NLOS precision-guided missile systems. Tactical air defense is provided by Tor-M1 and Osa-AKM surface-to-air missile systems, ASRAD-HELLAS mounted platforms, and MANPADS including FIM-92 Stinger missiles. Army Aviation operates AH-64A+ and AH-64D Longbow Apache attack helicopters, OH-58D Kiowa Warrior reconnaissance helicopters, CH-47D/SD Chinook transport helicopters, and NH90 TTH and UH-1H utility helicopters.

Force structure updates fall under the Agenda 2030 reform framework and long-term procurement planning established in 2025. Modernization plans include the multi-layered air defense initiative designated Achilles Shield, intended to integrate anti-aircraft, anti-ballistic, and anti-drone coverage across land formations. Upgrades cover Leopard 2 main battle tanks, the delivery and integration of Spike NLOS missile systems, and the induction of Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles received through bilateral transfers with Germany. Additional platform acquisitions include M1117 wheeled armored vehicles from United States defense assistance programs and domestic unmanned aerial vehicle developments managed through the Hellenic Centre for Defense Innovation.
