Indonesia Army

The Indonesian Army (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Darat) operates under the Army Chief of Staff and is organized into operational, strategic, and territorial structures. Operational combat power is concentrated in the Army Strategic Reserve Command (Kostrad), which comprises three infantry divisions: the 1st Infantry Division headquartered in Depok, West Java; the 2nd Infantry Division in Malang, East Java; and the 3rd Infantry Division in Gowa, South Sulawesi. Special operations fall under the Special Forces Command (Kopassus), headquartered in Cijantung, East Jakarta. Regional defense and territorial administration are maintained through Regional Military Commands (Kodam) distributed across the archipelago, supervising sub-regional commands (Korem) and district commands (Kodim). Aviation assets are directed by the Army Aviation Center (Puspenerbad), headquartered in Semarang.

Ground forces combine armor, mechanized infantry, field artillery, air defense, and army aviation elements. Armored units operate Leopard 2A4 and upgraded Leopard 2RI main battle tanks, alongside Harimau medium tanks, AMX-13 light tanks, and FV101 Scorpion light tanks. Mechanized and motorized infantry units deploy Marder 1A3 tracked infantry fighting vehicles, Pandur II wheeled infantry fighting vehicles, Pindad Anoa 6x6 armored personnel carriers, Badak 6x6 direct-fire support vehicles, M113 armored personnel carriers, and Komodo and Maung 4x4 tactical vehicles. Artillery units field CAESAR 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers, M109A4 tracked self-propelled howitzers, Astros II multiple launch rocket systems, and FH-2000 towed howitzers. Air defense regiments employ NASAMS surface-to-air missile batteries, Starstreak air defense systems, and Mistral short-range missiles. The Army Aviation Center fields AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters, Eurocopter AS550 Fennec light attack helicopters, Bell 412 utility helicopters, Mil Mi-17 transport helicopters, and CASA/IPTN CN-235 transport aircraft.

Modernization programs focus on expanding domestic defense production through state enterprise PT Pindad while integrating foreign acquisitions. Domestic output includes the Harimau medium tank, jointly developed with Turkish manufacturer FNSS, along with Anoa, Badak, and Maung multirole vehicles. Foreign procurements include Pandur II 8x8 armored vehicles and CAESAR self-propelled artillery systems. Operational missions involve border protection along land frontiers in Borneo and New Guinea, as well as counter-insurgency operations in the Papuan highlands against the West Papua National Liberation Army under combined task forces such as the Habema Operational Command. Externally, the army supplies engineering and infantry task forces to United Nations peacekeeping missions, including operations with MINUSCA in the Central African Republic and UNIFIL in Lebanon.
