Overview

The Uzbek Ground Forces operate under the Ministry of Defense, headquartered in Tashkent, with operational command exercised through the General Staff. Territorial command is divided across five military districts: Tashkent Military District headquartered at Tashkent, North-Western Military District at Nukus, Southwestern Special Military District at Karshi, Central Military District at Jizzakh, and Eastern Military District at Fergana. Armored formations operate T-80, T-72, T-64, and T-62 main battle tanks. Mechanized and motorized infantry units utilize BMP-1 and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, along with BTR-70, BTR-80, and BTR-82A armored personnel carriers. Wheeled armored mobility platforms include Typhoon-K, MaxxPro, Cougar, Oshkosh M-ATV, and Tigr armored utility vehicles. Artillery units field towed D-30 and D-20 howitzers, 2A36 Giatsint-B field guns, and self-propelled systems including 2S1 Gvozdika, 2S3 Akatsiya, 2S5 Giatsint-S, 2S7 Pion, and 2S9 Nona. Rocket artillery units field BM-21 Grad, BM-27 Uragan, and BM-30 Smerch systems. Domestic output includes the Arslon family of 6x6 and 8x8 armored personnel carriers equipped with 30mm automatic cannons, Tarlon and Tarlon-M 4x4 mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles, Qalqon light armored platforms, and To'fon 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers. Domestic modernization efforts include refitting Soviet-era T-64 tanks with Doosan engines and enhanced armor packages. Foreign arms procurements have delivered BTR-82A armored carriers, Typhoon-K MRAPs, Tor-M2KM air defense units, and Mi-35M attack helicopters from Russia, FD-2000 air defense platforms from China, and MRAP variants from the United States and Turkey.

Primary operational duties center on border defense along the southern boundary with Afghanistan, counter-terrorism operations, and internal security support.
