Turkish Navy

The Turkish Navy is undergoing an important transformation, driven by an ambitious domestic shipbuilding program designed to replace an aging fleet and assert its strategic interests in the surrounding seas. This modernization is underpinned by the "Blue Homeland" (Mavi Vatan) doctrine, a strategic vision that aims to secure Türkiye's maritime rights and influence in the Black Sea, Aegean Sea, and Eastern Mediterranean.

A key driver for this naval renaissance is the necessity to renew its fleet of frigates, submarines, and fast attack craft, many of which are nearing the end of their operational lives. In response, Türkiye has embarked on an aggressive shipbuilding campaign with a strong emphasis on self-sufficiency. A notable achievement of this push is the high local content ratio in its naval projects, which reached 70% in 2017, thanks to the contributions of domestic companies like Aselsan, Havelsan, and Roketsan. The Turkish defense industry is now capable of developing a wide array of naval systems, including combat management, weapons, and sensor suites that are NATO-compatible.

The centerpiece of this effort is the National Ship (MİLGEM) project, which has produced the Ada-class corvettes and the larger, more capable İstif-class frigates. The lead ship of the İstif-class, TCG Istanbul, entered service in early 2024, equipped with indigenous anti-ship missiles. The Turkish Navy has contracted the state shipyard ASFAT to build the first TF-2000 air defense destroyer, designed to counter advanced aerial threats, with launch expected in 2028 and delivery by 2030.

The navy's capabilities have been significantly enhanced by the commissioning of TCG Anadolu, a multipurpose amphibious assault ship. While initially planned for F-35B aircraft, it now operates unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs): Bayraktar TB3 drones launched from the ship struck targets with live munitions in October 2025, leveraging Türkiye's strength in drone technology. This platform, along with Bayraktar-class tank landing ships, provides a substantial power projection and amphibious assault capability. The submarine fleet, primarily composed of German-designed boats, is also being modernized with the introduction of new Reis-class attack submarines.

Türkiye's operational reach is expanding beyond its immediate littoral waters. Joint exercises with allied navies, such as the one involving TCG Anadolu and a U.S. amphibious warship in the Eastern Mediterranean, demonstrate an intent to operate further afield and ensure regional stability. Through its robust and increasingly indigenous naval industry, Türkiye is not only modernizing its own fleet but is also becoming a significant exporter of naval platforms, further enhancing its international standing.
