India Moves to Join France-Led FCAS Sixth-Generation Fighter Program

India has formally begun working to join the French-led Future Combat Air System (FCAS), its Ministry of Defence told Parliament on 7 August 2026. The confirmation appears in the government's Action Taken Report on the Twentieth Report of the Standing Committee on Defence, covering the Demands for Grants of the Ministry of Defence for 2026-27.

The ministry's wording is unambiguous: "The Ministry of Defence has initiated efforts in a concerted manner to co-join the 6th Generation Fighter Aircraft Development Programme viz. Future Combat Air System (FCAS) spearheaded by the French Government." It is the first time New Delhi has confirmed the ambition on the record, after reports of preliminary discussions surfaced in February 2026.

FCAS was launched in 2017 by France and Germany, with Spain joining later. It bundles a New Generation Fighter with remote carriers and a combat cloud tying the two together. The fighter pillar collapsed in June 2026 when Berlin withdrew after long-running workshare talks between Dassault Aviation and Airbus over the prime contractor role failed to produce an agreement. Paris has continued the aircraft on its own terms, which is what opens the door for a new partner.

For India the attraction is access to technologies its own programs do not yet cover — manned-unmanned teaming, combat-cloud networking, advanced propulsion and stealth — without abandoning the indigenous AMCA fifth-generation fighter now in development. India left the Russian FGFA program, the export derivative of the Su-57 Felon, in 2018 and has had no sixth-generation route since.

There is also an established industrial relationship to build on. GlobalMilitary.net records 36 Rafale DH/EH fighters in Indian Air Force service, with a further 26 Rafale M on order for the Indian Navy fleet. The wider IAF inventory of 2,217 aircraft still leans heavily on older types: 259 Su-30 fighters, 86 Jaguar strike aircraft, 59 MiG-29 and 36 Mirage 2000, against 36 Tejas delivered out of 182 on order. Army Recognition puts the service's shortfall at 13 squadrons below its sanctioned strength.

Nothing has been signed. The ministry described efforts to "co-join" the program rather than an agreed entry, and neither the French government nor Dassault has commented on the terms India would be offered — workshare, technology transfer and cost share all remain undefined. Any Indian contribution would also have to be reconciled with AMCA, whose prototype and engine decisions are due before FCAS reaches a comparable milestone.
