M-ATV

The Oshkosh M-ATV is a mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicle developed for the United States Department of Defense to replace the M1114 HMMWV. Development was initiated in 2008 to provide a lighter MRAP variant capable of operating in the difficult terrain and degraded infrastructure of Afghanistan. Following a competitive evaluation involving several manufacturers, Oshkosh was awarded the production contract in June 2009 based on survivability ratings and technical manufacturing capacity.

The vehicle’s design integrates a Plasan-designed armored hull with elements of the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) chassis and the TAK-4 independent coil-sprung suspension system. For protection, the vehicle features a V-shaped hull designed to mitigate effects from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The engine compartment is protected by an automatic fire suppression system, and the vehicle is designed to maintain mobility for a limited distance following small arms fire to the engine's oil or hydraulic systems. Mobility is further supported by a central tire inflation system and run-flat inserts.

Armament is roof-mounted and can be operated manually with a gunner protection kit or via a remote weapon station. Manual weapon options include M240 machine guns, Mk 19 grenade launchers, M2 Browning machine guns, and anti-tank guided missiles including the MILAN or BGM-71 TOW. The M153 CROWS is the standard remote weapon station, though the vehicle has also been demonstrated with the M230LF 30 mm chain gun. Specialized variants include configurations for special forces, troop transport, engineering, command, and medical evacuation. The platform has also been integrated with the TerraMax system for unmanned operations and counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) involving radar and electronic warfare sensors.

The M-ATV entered combat service in Afghanistan in late 2009. It is widely operated by the United States Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Special Operations Command. The vehicle has been exported or donated to several nations, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Croatia, Poland, and Uzbekistan. Combat history includes use by Iraqi Special Operations Forces during the operation to retake Mosul and by various factions in the Yemeni conflict. In 2023, the vehicle was supplied to Ukraine, where it has seen active use. Since 2014, fleet management has included reset programs to standardize existing vehicles with underbody improvement kits and enhanced fire extinguishing systems.
