Description
The 93rd Air Base is located at Timișoara Traian Vuia International Airport, 12 km northeast of the Timișoara city center. The facility borders the village of Giarmata-Vii and was historically referred to as Giarmata Airport. Construction of the runway infrastructure at the current site occurred between 1952 and 1953. The 93rd Air Base was formally established in 1953.
The 93rd Air Base was disbanded in September 2004 after operating MiG-15, MiG-17, MiG-23, and MiG-21 aircraft throughout its history. Following the decommissioning of the unit, its MiG-21 Lancer aircraft and IAR 330 helicopters were reassigned to the 71st Air Base at Câmpia Turzii. The military section of the airport currently operates as an annex of the 71st Air Base, hosting the 712th Helicopter Squadron and Bayraktar TB2 drones for the Romanian Land Forces.
