RMAF Kuala Lumpur (Sungai Besi Air Base)

RMAF Kuala Lumpur, also known as Sungai Besi Air Base and Simpang Airport, was a military airbase located in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Construction began in 1930 on a former tin mining site. Commercial operations began in 1933 with the arrival of an Imperial Airways Armstrong Whitworth Atalanta aircraft. The facility was upgraded in 1936 to accommodate light and medium aircraft and expanded further in 1948.

In 1952, the location became the primary airport for Kuala Lumpur and served as an operational base for Federation Air Service from 1951 to 1960 and Malayan Airways from 1952 to 1965. Following the completion of a terminal building, the facility was designated an international airport on August 1, 1956. Commercial passenger services ceased on August 30, 1965, with civilian flight operations transferring to Subang International Airport.

The site transitioned to a military installation owned by the Ministry of Defence and operated by the Royal Malaysian Air Force, having previously been designated RAF Kuala Lumpur. The facility supported military operations during the Malayan Emergency. As an airbase, the site contained military operational facilities, aircraft maintenance infrastructure, and training facilities. In 1982, the Royal Malaysian Air Force Museum was established at the base, hosting historical aircraft displays including the de Havilland Tiger Moth.

The Malaysian government finalized plans to relocate the airbase to Sendayan on August 5, 2010. The Royal Malaysian Air Force ceased all operations at the site on March 16, 2018, and the installation was officially closed.
