Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base (Mandai Airfield)

Sultan Hasanuddin Air Force Base is a Type-A military facility operated by the Indonesian Air Force, situated on the border between Makassar and Maros Regency in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

The site was established by the Dutch colonial government in 1935 as Kadieng Airfield and officially opened in September 1937. Japanese forces occupied the airfield in February 1942 during World War II, renaming it Mandai Airfield and utilizing Allied prisoners of war to upgrade its facilities. The airfield was subjected to repeated Allied air raids throughout the conflict. Following post-war repairs by Australian and Indian engineers, the facility was operated by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force until control was transferred to the Indonesian Air Force on 2 June 1950. The installation was bombed in April 1958 by Permesta rebel forces operating Douglas A-26 Invader aircraft. In 1980, the base was renamed after Sultan Hasanuddin, the 17th-century ruler of the Gowa Sultanate.

The base houses four military units: the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron, operating Boeing 737-200 and CN 235-220 aircraft; the 11th Combat Squadron, equipped with Sukhoi Su-27 and Su-30 fighter aircraft; the 33rd Transport Squadron, flying Lockheed C-130H Hercules aircraft; and the 044th Engineering Squadron.

The military installation shares its airfield grounds with Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. Following the opening of a new civilian terminal in 2008, the former terminal facility was repurposed for military operations.
