Suryadarma Air Force Base (Kalijati Airfield)

Suryadarma Air Force Base, formerly known as Kalijati Airfield, is a Type A Indonesian Air Force installation located in Kalijati, Subang Regency, West Java. Controlled by the National Air Operations Command, the base serves military aviation and flight training functions.

Established in January 1916 by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force, it was the first military airfield constructed in Indonesia. A military flight school opened at the site in 1917. Prior to World War II, the airfield hosted various Dutch military aircraft, including Glenn Martin TA hydroplanes, Wright-Martin Model R reconnaissance aircraft, Curtiss P-6 Hawk fighters, and Martin 139 bombers. During the Pacific War, Dutch, Royal Air Force, and Royal Australian Air Force units operated from the base. Japanese forces captured the installation on 1 March 1942 during the Battle of Kalijati, subsequently basing Imperial Japanese Army Air Force bomber and fighter units at the airfield. The formal signing of the Dutch East Indies surrender occurred at the site on 8–9 March 1942.

Ownership of the base was transferred to the Indonesian Air Force on 27 December 1949 following the Indonesian National Revolution. It served as the primary air force flight school until 1960. In June 1971, the Agricultural Air Unit was established at the base to conduct pest control operations, historically utilizing LIPNUR Gelatik, Cessna 188, and Pilatus PC-6 Porter aircraft. The 7th Air Squadron established its home base at the airfield in 1991. The installation was renamed Suryadarma Air Force Base on 7 September 2001 in honor of Suryadi Suryadarma, the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indonesian Air Force.

The base currently hosts the 8th Air Wing, the 7th Air Squadron, and the Agricultural Air Unit. The 7th Air Squadron operates Eurocopter EC120 Colibri helicopters. On-site facilities open to the public include the Museum Rumah Sejarah and Museum Amerta Dirgantara Mandala.
